Adult acne can be an emotional and frustrating experience. When this happens, we tend to blame the way we look after our skin. This can lead to us experimenting with different creams and lotions to fix the problem. However, there is a chance that your acne could be giving you a warning sign in relation to your health.
1 You need to change your diet
Foods that are high on the glycaemic index, such as pizza, sugars and refined carbs, are the woes of having radiant skin. Dr Jeremy Fenton, a specialist in medical, cosmetic and surgical dermatology explains. Some people do not benefit from certain foods, resulting in acne and breakouts.
2 Your pillowcases and towels may need freshening up
In order to stop breakouts, it is important to change your pillowcases and towels at least once a week. As we use our pillows and towels, oil and dirt can build up on them, and this could be the reason for your breakout.
3 Your make up could be making your acne worse
Makeup can be another reason that your acne will not subside. Girls often suffer from acne if they wear thick concealer and/or a full face of makeup .
Your makeup may also be comedogenic, meaning it can clog up your pores and increase the chances of having a breakout.
Removing your make up thoroughly every night is crucial to keep your acne down and, instead of buying new makeup aimlessly, try and test them out on your skin first, just to see how it suitable it is for your skin type.
4 Your caffeine intake is too high
Caffeine doesn’t directly cause acne. However, drinking too much of it will play havoc on your hormones. Caffeine can trick your body into feeling stressed out, and we all know how bad stress is for the skin.
Stress can cause inflammations to your skin which could result in acne. One blogger gave up coffee and found that her acne cleared up as a result after doing so.
5 Your alcohol intake is too high
Consuming alcohol is notoriously bad for your skin. This is due to a variety of factors, as it depends specifically what you drink. There are many ways that alcohol can be bad for your skin, such as the high sugar and additive content causing breakouts.
The more you drink the more you increase your chances of breaking out, and your skin feeling dry. If this happens, your skin will inevitably produce more oil to counteract the dehydrated skin which can result in spots.
6 You need exercise
As you already know, exercise is something we should be doing at least 3-4 times a week. But if you’ve been skipping sessions at the gym or have been driving to work each day rather than walking, you may want to get back into a routine again because it could be the cause of your breakouts.
