Let’s face it, a lot of us still carry out essential hair removal at home. Sometimes you don’t have time to get to your local salon so it’s always a good idea to know how to remove hair safely and in a way that’s going to get you the best results.
There are a number of options for removing hair at home, with some results lasting longer than others. Sadly none of these are permanent and you will have to repeat the process on a regular basis.
Getting the best results from DIY hair removal techniques
This is probably the most common DIY hair removal technique, not only is it a fast way to get rid of unwanted hair but it’s affordable and easy to carry out. Getting the best results means ensuring that you are using a good quality razor and shaving foam or cream. Avoid dry shaving unless you are using an electric razor, it doesn’t do your skin any good and can cause it to feel irritated for a time afterwards.
Shaving in the bath or shower means that you are in a moist environment so the shaving cream you are using will work better; you will also avoid the dreaded shaving rash. Make sure that you moisturise afterwards too for silky smooth results.
Shaving is most often used on the legs, underarms, and sometimes the bikini line. It can be a great method to use if you need a quick result for an unexpected night out. Results are short lived though, typically 2 – 3 days.
With a number of waxing options available for use a home, from strips to hot wax pots, there is no reason why you can’t carry out your own waxing at home. Most commonly used for legs, underarms, and bikini hair removal, waxing offers longer term results than shaving, typically 3 – 6 weeks.
To get the best results make sure that the hair is a suitable length (not too long or too short) around ¼ - ½ inch is ideal, so that you can be sure that it’s pulled out at the root. Whether you are using strips or hot wax, always make sure that you remove the hair in the direction of growth. Once you’ve finished make sure that all the wax is removed and any missed hairs are tweezed for the perfect finish.
On more delicate areas, such as the bikini line and underarms, apply a thick cream, something designed for nappy rash is actually very effective, post wax to avoid redness and irritation. Make sure that you exfoliate your skin regularly (avoid until 48 hours after waxing) to help stop in-grown hairs. You will also need to avoid hot showers or baths, sun exposure, and fake tanning creams for 24 hours.
While waxing is a great home hair removal technique we don’t recommend that you carry out a Brazilian or Hollywood wax at home, general tidying up is fine, but anything more should be carried out by a professional.
This is very similar to waxing in that the treatment pulls the hairs out by the root. Epilation is best suited to the legs and underarms; you can use an epilator for bikini hair removal but make sure that you fully stretch the skin to avoid any painful pinching of loose skin.
Unlike waxing and shaving, epilation can be carried out on wet or dry skin. Many of the same rules apply as with waxing, namely, make sure the that hair is long enough, go in the direction of hair growth, and exfoliate regularly once the skin has settled down to avoid in-grown hairs.
As with waxing you should avoid moisturising, sun exposure, fake tanning creams, exfoliation, and hot baths and showers for 24 – 48 hours. With exfoliation, you can expect to be hair free for 3 – 6 weeks.
Hair removal cream
Before using hair removal cream make sure that you have cleaned the area, taking a shower or bath beforehand softens the hair. It’s important to make sure that you have the right cream for your skin type, especially if you have sensitive skin, by testing the cream on a small area you will avoid unnecessary irritation.
Make sure that you follow the instructions supplied and apply plenty of cream so that the unwanted hair is coated thoroughly, don’t rub the cream in. As with all hair removal techniques, make sure you exfoliate to help avoid in-grown hairs. Results typically last for a week or two.
Permanent hair removal
The only truly permanent form of hair removal is carried out in specialist salons, these techniques involve laser hair removal and IPL hair removal. The best laser hair removal treatment uses Cynosure lasers which offers the most effective results.
